Yea, every horse has their thing...I'm starting to see it more often the longer I have Doc, and he'd definitely getting to be more loving towards me. We also communicate a lot better, he's starting to know when I'm not in the mood for crap (pardon my french) and responds to that. He also knows when I'm in a good/generous mood and tries to pull things over on me, thinking I'll be in too good of a mood to be mean and make him work (it doesn't work though!)
Thanks,I never really thought about it that way, I think it really helps to put things in a good perspective. and Doc also has his little signs, he doesn't always give them and sometimes he gets to be in too much of my personal space, like using me as a scratching post, but I know what you mean by the little things they do to show affection...
Its really good that Sox doesnt test you and you were really lucky! I have found that I have to constantly be after him on his stuff, but he still tries to get away with stuff! oh well, as long as I keep correcting him and dont give up, I think he'll get better, or at least I hope so! I will continue to work him and I generally do work him hard to correct his issues but sometimes I wander, "Do I work him too hard? Is he happy?" I think he is happy, but I don't know. What about you, have you ever had those feelings?
i agree, that it will take time, but i dont think any amount of hard work will help the judges opinion of an english horse in western classes, and i dont really like showmanship so i dont really try, its just for fun, like i said before. yeah, after i get to know doc a little more it will get easier, and i think i know him pretty well right now, especially when hes being buttheaded or trying to lead me instead of the other way around. also, after a couple years he'll maybe stop testing me, i really hope so! did sox ever test you? if so, how long until he stopped, or is he still testing you?
we dont have that many disciplines, I just get bored of doing the samething over and over and sometimes I like to switch things up...we do very poorly in western and showmanship (when I say poorly I mean last or next to last place) but its just for fun. what I really like doing is doing all the english classes, though, because Iowa is a mostly western state, we don't have all that many. I think its really cool that you and Sox are going into the bigger shows, I don't think Doc and I are ready for that yet, especially since this was my first full show year and his first with me. I hope you do really well in the big shows and I think you will. Good Luck! Now I can't think of anything else to ask you...any ideas?
I mainly show him in English Pleasure or Walk-Trot, I sometimes dabble in Western Pleasure, but we don't do very well in those classes, we don't have the build or speed for Western. We do fairly well in halter classes, but then its the same thing, judges look for the western horse and Doc is an english horse...I've done showmanship a couple of times, but we down right suck at it but I don't really care because showmanship is not my thing...we haven't gotten around to doing any riding pattern classes yet, I tried once and Doc was flipping out right before the class so we scratched...we found out that day that Doc will NOT pea with a person riding him and he really doesn't like splash back because he will hold it in as long as possible if he doesnt have bedding in his stall...
I dont know if Doc loves stall life, hes definitely not the laid-back type and is easily overexcited...but he was a full-time pasture horse before we got him, and he seems like hes adjusted to stall life pretty well, but, like I said, I dont know if he loves stall life
Yeah, I wish Doc could go out during the day, but where I board, that isn't an option...I mean, theres a pasture, but only for the owners horses. I do always try to let Doc out and roll or do whatever he wants at least once a day in the arena or a roundpen...
It is kind of difficult to get his hair looking the way it does...it looks really bad right now because I cant bathe him and hes gotten his winter fuzz! Its also probably not as hard as it might be for you because Doc is a Stall horse, he's basically in the stall all day and so he doesnt have anyone to play with or anywhere to get nicks and scrapes. Also he always get a very good bath before we go to shows, we also keep a blanket on him the night before before, or else he'll rub his bands out and get covered in new poo and bedding!:) but bugs do bite him a lot when hes clean so sometimes he gets a bunch of tiny bumps right before a show and then his coat isnt so smooth looking. but sox's coat looks really good from what I could tell from ur pix... the same thing is for Doc, he was pretty cheap horse wise but expense in my parents view (especially my dad, hes not into the horse thing)
its really good that you do well at the shows and that you feel comfortable enough that you can get out of the local shows! I cant say the same, sadly, about never having a bad show...its not so much a bad show but a bad couple of classes for doc and me...:P I hope you do well in the Arab shows and Good Luck!
