Personally, I prefer the rope halters. I feel I have more control, and can really get my point across faster. Flat halter are great, don't get me wrong., But if you've got an unruly horse, like one of mine, a rope halter is a Godsend! My horse was really bad about breakin ties when tied in the aisle. I was using a flat halter on him at the time. After the 3rd time, I said "screw it", and started using the rope halter. That, combined with a tie ring, really hit home the next time he tried to break loose. I use one on my good old man too.. but just cos. lol Looks good on him too. =p

If you were to have a rope halter you definatley want to make sure it is cotton so it is easily broken free if you ever have your horse tied up. It can happen to any horse. Or if you go with a flat halter make sure that also has a leather strap where you buckle it. In my opinion a rope halter does have more control, but if your horse leads and ties well then there is more of a color variaty.

If you have a well mannered/exsperienced horse flat halters are great i use flat halters on most of my horses at home but when i have a horse with no manneres and always wants to walk right on top of you or pulls you around i use a rope halter, i also use a rope halter when working with our younger horses because you can get their attention better when the decide to spaz out and you dont want them to hurt themselves. Rope halters definatly give you more control but you have to know how to use the rope halter but not abuse it you could really mess up a horse if you dont use it correctly.

It all just depends on your horses behavior. I own two arabians who are very well mannered but one of them dislikes the washrack and trailer. If we are just using the halter to get her around the barn, a flat halter is what we use, but when she refuses the trailer or washrack we use the rope halter because if she pulls back, the knots on it will hurt her....so she learns. Comfort wise, a horse would probably like the flat ones, but if you are afraid of them having bad ground manners, the use of a rope halter will be there to asist you when they act up. Warning, you must be firm but not not harsh with these rope halters

I prefer Rope Halters

I prefer flat halters because you have more control over the horse and if you don't put rope halters on probably or whatever the knots will rub the hair off of the horses head and my trainer has seen some pretty severe cases of it! So all in all I like flat halters A LOT better!

i think flat halters are better! i have used a rope halter and my horse once freaked out at the trailer and the rope halter came off and i tied it correctly too! i have never had any of my horses break a flat halter. i do use the rope halter sometimes but i feel the flat halter is better!

my horse broke his flat halter ONCE but it was cheap and its easily fixable so no big deal but i still don't like rope halters i was at a horse camp once and i didn't bring mine so i used one of theres and he's a lil brat and i felt like i had no control over him with the rope halter! so i like flat halters a lot better

I perfer rope halters cause you can lunge and if they try to run away it hits their pressure points you can put a flat halter over a rope halter for even better control rope halters give alot of control my pony used to run away from me in the field cuz he didn't want 2 get off grass and when i had the ropehalter hehe tried but he couln't pull away from my grip

I have always used "flat halters" the type you can buckle & get emgency release straps on. I never had liked rope halters for one specific reason : 1> if your horse struggles with you while walking or you give them a quick little tug on the lead, it slowly becomes tighter and tighter on the horse's face and cutting into their facial tissue would be terrible.
It's just my opinion and also if a horse is turned out with their halters on, the tightening issue could result in th paddock or if he got hung up or caught on a branch..haha knowing the equines little curious brains!
I like he quick release halters ("flat kind") because if that id happen then the halter would just break free and not potentially kill or injure my horse
=) hope that helped you!
